Review 4: For the Old Thymers

Friends of Mine – 506 Swan Street, Richmond 3121

Heading home after a glorious stroll around the Tan, we decided to hit up a trusty nearby café, ‘Friends of Mine’.  For those who are yet to visit FOM, you may be more familiar with one of its’ sister cafés, ‘Porgie and Mr. Jones’, located in Hawthorn.  Both cafes provide a large and open dining area with indoor and outdoor seating for those sunny summer days.  Both cafes’ menus offer a wide selection of dishes for breakfast and lunch, and more importantly both serve our fave – avo mash!

We believe that a firm friendship is based on a mutual appreciation of the same interests, so when we noticed that FOM’s mash was located on the menu under “These are a few of our favourite things…” we knew that we were going to be BFFE.  A love for avo mash AND The Sound of Music – WIN!

The mash is written up as “Smashed avocado w/ thyme buttered mushrooms, marinated feta and torn basil on toasted five grain bread” for $17.90, or add a poached egg for $19.90.

As regular breaky goers, we were aware that going out for breakfast on a Saturday morning ensures a bit of a wait, and indeed we were correct.  The meal arrived half an hour after ordering, however this did not deter us too much as the presentation looked decent and appealing.

Initially the quantity seemed small, but after digging our knife and fork in to it, we realised that the serving size was perfect and we would most definitely be full upon completion.  The avocado was ripe and green which was a positive, however, the consistency unfortunately let this dish down.  These sisters enjoy a good chunk of avo here and there, and unfortunately this avo mash had minimal chunks to be seen and overall was quite smooth.

Unlike most mashes, this dish offered quite the array of additional ingredients, such as fresh basil, feta and thyme buttered mushrooms.  The basil provided a nice touch and the thyme mushies were DELISH.  The feta was abundant, however, extremely salty.  Whilst these additions were appreciated, the sauce from the mushrooms seeped into the mash, making the avo a smidge too mooshy and the toast a wee bit soggy.

FOM scored half marks in terms of the AVO factor as it provided an original take on the traditional mash.

Our Recommendations:

  • Porgie + Mr Jones (291 Auburn Rd, Hawthorn 3122) &Snow Pony (95 Whitehorse Rd, Deepdene 3103) – If you’re a fan of FOM but you’re not in the area, you may find one of their sister cafés a little more convenient.
  • OJ in a jar – Fancy a refreshing juice to go with your meal? FOM offers delicious freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juices, and add their signature touch by serving them in a jar.

Overall, we would say that FOM’s mash offers a profusion of flavour, yet requires zero teeth to eat with. So the next time you’re looking for a place to take the grandparents (we know we always are), then ladies and gents, leave your dentures at home and hit up Friends of Mine.

Blogocado Mash’s rating: 7/10, an avocaDO
Until next time, bye for now,
